With Dan Wilson, Brian Malow, and Joe Tobin.
The Improv presents "Off the Charts", a unique show that blends
stand-up comedy with science, and humorous PowerPoint visuals. The
show was developed by Tim Lee; a comedian and a PhD . "I came up with
the idea while sitting through seminars in grad school. There is just
so much potential for humor in science ... if you know where to look."
Off the Charts comes to the San Jose Improv Thursday, January 29th at 8PM.
Lee has become an underground sensation with over a million views on
his YouTube videos. Piggybacking that success, Tim took "Off the
Charts" on the road selling out shows from Seattle to Hollywood.
Audiences hungry for comedy that is smart and funny flocked to the
show.
Lee's comedy uses scientific phenomena and tools to explain everything
from the hair that collects on a bar of soap to how his standards drop
rapidly with abstinence.
"I did my first PowerPoint comedy bit while giving a seminar on salmon
population dynamics. The idea hibernated in my mind, but it wasn't
until years later that I tried it at an open mic and the audience went
wild," Lee said.
Visuals have long been a part of comedy. Johnny Carson, Jay Leno and
David Letterman have made use of a wide variety of celebrity photos
and newspaper articles to evoke laughs. "I'm just putting a new twist
on it" says Lee.
Lee is now a full-time comic. He says it was "a soul-wrenching"
decision. "Professionally, as a consultant, I was well compensated,
but I was incredibly bored. The only reward was money. Then I opened
this fortune cookie at a Chinese restaurant and it read, If you don't
change your direction you're likely to end up where you're headed."
"I've been told many times that people feel smarter after the show. If
that happens that's great, but that's not the point. I want people to
think a little, laugh a lot, and leave happy. Comedy is where you look
for it. You just need a little imagination.."
